A Korean star has opened up about the controversial dystopian novel, The Handmaids Tale, and how he feels the series will be re-released as a television series in 2018.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Joon Hwang said that his character played by actress Jung Chae Young was one of the first people he had to deal with after being forcibly sterilized at the age of 13.
Hwang was born with a condition called cystic fibrosis, a genetic disorder that caused him to lose the ability to breathe.
As a child, he had a wheelchair and a cane, and he had difficulty using his hands.
He said he was never given the choice of what he wanted to do with his life.
“I was very lonely and was always in a situation where I couldn’t go out,” Hwang told the reporter.
“My mother and I were always trying to find a way to be with each other and do things.
And it was hard for me because I wasn’t able to go outside.”
He went on to say that the dystopian novel’s portrayal of a world in which there are no rights, no justice, no freedom, made it a “fantastic” read.
“The book was my first introduction to the world of The Handmaiden,” Hwan said.
“It was very scary, very dark, but it was also very funny and it was very dark and scary.
It was like a fairy tale.”
The novel was adapted into a short film, The Red Wedding, in 2014, which starred Joon as a fictionalized version of the main character, played by Oscar Isaac.
Hwang was asked if he was surprised that Isaac was cast in the film.
“It was not a shock to me,” Hui said.
The film earned a Golden Globe nomination for Best Documentary Short, which Hwang also starred in.
Hwan went on say that he had only a vague idea of who he was playing when the film was made, but that he felt the character was a part of him.
“As soon as I saw it, I was like, ‘Oh my God!
That’s Joon!’,” Hwu said.”
And it was not just for me to see it, it was for all the kids to see, and all the parents to see,” he continued.
“That’s why I love that movie so much, because the story is so realistic, so realistic.
I thought the character in the book is so tragic.”
Hwang has since starred in numerous films, including the drama The Killing and the comedy series You’re Next.
He also had a cameo in the 2013 feature film The Secret Life of Pets, which was directed by Kevin Hart.
Hwan is currently promoting the first season of The House That I Live In, which is set to premiere on March 31, 2018.
